In 1968 Jack and Lora Lee Spurlock moved their family of six to the African nation of Zaire (formerly Belgian Congo) and Jack labored there for 12 years as a missionary pilot. Wings of Calvary was the name given to their first aircraft, a Cessna 206 and to their ministry.
One day in July, 1980 Jack Spurlock experienced an engine-failure while climbing through a mountain pass, his plane loaded with Bibles, medicines and supplies for the jungle mission stations he served. Jack surrendered his life in that tiny mountain valley, choosing to turn away from the only suitable landing area available to his heavily laden aircraft. The floor of this tiny valley was covered with vegetable gardens and peppered with women working these family plots. Jack Spurlock, my Father, turned away from an assured landing he would likely have survived to a landing that guaranteed the safety of the innocent women and children he saw there. Jack Spurlock, husband of Lora Lee Spurlock, father to children Bob, Sherry, Rick and Sandra, in the moment of impact stepped into the presence of his LORD, Jesus. The decision Jack made was an easy one for him. Many years before, Jack Spurlock had already counted himself as dead when he surrendered his life to the Lordship of Jesus Christ.
Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ, nevertheless I live, yet not I but Christ lies in me. And the life I live in the flesh, I live by the faith of Son of God Who loved me and gave Himself for me.
Wings of Calvary is no longer a missionary aviation ministry serving in the jungles of Central Africa. Wings of Calvary Ministries now has the Nations as its focus. The message is the same – Jesus is the answer for every challenge mankind may face. 1 John 2:1-2 says that Jesus Christ is One sent alongside us by the Father as an atonement for the sins of the whole world. We still believe that Jesus deserves to see the reward of His suffering - multitudes in the valley of decision. Thus, our passion is to preach the Gospel, heal the sick and raise up disciples in the nations so that when Jesus returns He will find faith in the earth. Currently we are doing this in:
Mentoring and Discipleship
The woman from Luke 8:43 who had hemorrhaged blood for 12 years was made whole because she believed the truth of Malachi 4:2, which says, For those who fear my name, the Sun of Righteousness will rise with healing in its wings. Like her, we know that Jesus, the Messiah heals. We believe that not only does this knowledge give us faith for our own healing, but also for the healing of others. That is why we’ve chosen this as the key Scripture of Wings of Calvary Ministries – Malachi 4:2.
